Berchtesgadener Advent
Frequently Asked Questions
Before Your Visit
Does admission cost anything?
Admission to the Berchtesgadener Advent is free — the Christmas tree labyrinth and the craft workshop are free too. You only pay at the individual stalls.
Do I need to reserve tickets?
No, not for the market itself. Tickets for the Advent singing at the AlpenCongress can be booked separately — see the AlpenCongress Berchtesgaden website.
When is it least busy?
It’s quietest on weekdays in the early afternoon between 12 and 3 pm. The weekends before Christmas are the busiest days — if you want to avoid the crowds, come on a weekday instead.
What should I wear?
Warm and weatherproof clothing. The stalls are outdoors. Winter boots are recommended, especially in snow. Don’t forget gloves — even if you’re holding a mulled wine.
At the Market
Can I pay by card?
Many, but not all, stalls accept card or Apple/Google Pay. Cash in small notes is the safest option — especially at the smaller craft stalls.
Is there a deposit on the mugs?
No. There is no deposit on the mugs. The collectible mug must be purchased, and can then be refilled again and again. Mugs from previous years can still be used as well.
Where are the nearest restrooms?
Public restrooms are located at the Tourist Info in the AlpenCongress Berchtesgaden or at the town hall. You can also use the restrooms of the restaurants at the market (Goldener Bär, Hotel Edelweiss, Bier Adam, Gasthaus Neuhaus).
Is there Wi-Fi?
Public Wi-Fi for guests is available at the AlpenCongress and in many nearby restaurants. There’s no dedicated network outdoors at the market square — however, mobile coverage is reliable.
Can I bring my dog?
Yes, dogs on a leash are welcome at the market. However, when it’s crowded we recommend leaving pets at home — the hustle, the smells and the crowds can be stressful for many dogs.
Am I allowed to take photos?
Of course! We’re always happy about tags on social media @berchtesgadener_advent / #berchtesgadeneradvent. For commercial shoots, filming permits, or press photography, please register in advance at info@berchtesgadener-advent.de
With Children
From what age is the market suitable?
For children from about 2 years old, it gets really exciting — the carousel, mini train and craft workshop all become experiences of their own.
Is the market stroller-friendly?
Yes — everything is at ground level and easily accessible with a stroller. The Laternenweg (lantern path) above the market can only be navigated with an all-terrain stroller. It has narrow walkways and real inclines, and is only recommended in dry weather.
Is there a baby changing room?
Yes — at the Tourist Information in the AlpenCongress. The staff on site are happy to help.
For Groups
Are there discounts for groups?
Registered groups of 20 or more receive a free Berchtesgadener Advent mug at the Tourist Info in the AlpenCongress. Register at: berchtesgadener-advent.de/reisegruppen
Where does the coach park?
You can drop off your guests at the AlpenCongress. The nearest coach parking is at Salinenplatz / next to Berchtesgaden Station.
Do you offer market tours?
Of course! You can find all guided tours (including for groups) at gaestefuehrer-berchtesgaden.de
Accessibility
Is the market wheelchair accessible?
The main areas at Schlossplatz and Weihnachtsschützenplatz are at ground level and easily accessible by wheelchair. Some alleys in the historic town center have cobblestones. The Laternenweg is not wheelchair accessible.
Are there accessible parking spaces?
Yes, accessible parking spaces are designated at the AlpenCongress and in the surrounding parking garages. Details on accessibility can be found on the AlpenCongress Berchtesgaden website.
