The Lantern Trail carries the mood. Those who walk up in the evening experience Advent the way the locals know it.

The Stations
Five points, with lanterns strung between them. Each has its own atmosphere — from the bustle of the market to the full starry sky above the chapel.
Weihnachtsschützenplatz
The trail begins in the middle of the hustle and bustle. Between the scent of mulled wine and bosna, the first lantern leads out of the market — past Gasthof Bier-Adam and up towards the mountain.
The Kalvarienberg
The first climb — not steep, but noticeable. To the right the historic centre, to the left the dark edge of the forest. Between the trees the lanterns form a chain of warm points that trace the path ahead.
The Brine Pipeline Walkway
A narrow path that once carried the salt down from the mountains. Today it is laid with planks and lined closely with lanterns. To the right the valley, to the left the mountains — and below you, Berchtesgaden in the light.
Chapel of the Beatitudes
The reward for the climb. A small chapel, a panoramic view over the Berchtesgaden Alps, the Watzmann directly opposite. Here you pause for a moment — just as the locals do.
Back to Schlossplatz
The Path of the Beatitudes leads down into the Nonntal valley and from there to Schlossplatz. You return to the town, to the market — and anyone who fancies one has certainly earned a mulled wine.

Three things that help
Bring a torch
The lanterns create atmosphere, but not enough light to spot unevenness in the ground. A small torch or your phone light is perfectly sufficient.
Follow the signs
Signposts guide you along the entire circular route. At two points shorter shortcuts branch off back — these are additionally signposted.
Allow enough time
About one hour of walking at a leisurely pace. Anyone who lingers at the Chapel of the Beatitudes — and most people do — should allow 75 to 90 minutes.
